Russell has been known to admit to a past life in Autograss racing. As an FDMC member, he has been a strong contender in autotesting, with various hard driven Minis, more recently sharing these with his daughter Emma.

More recently, Russell has acquired a 205 GTi 1.9, used in rallies, sprints and Solo's, and is also involved in event organisation, including acting as Chief Marshal for the Abingdon CARnival.
