The season starts in style

Sunday morning at Rushmoor Arena, and as the scrutineers checked the competing cars, the course marshals got their briefing from Clerk of the Course Steve Castle, ready for a busy day's motorsport. This extra-length, 3 page report includes a selection of the award winners, and of drivers from the invited clubs, and, among the 40-plus FDMC entries, a number of our newer members who were first timers at this event, and in some cases competing in their first sprint.

With the day turning out dry and sunny, two practice runs led into four timed runs, with the best to count. In these good conditions, the overall winner, Simon Besant, clocked just 50.39 seconds in his V8 Westfield: will we see the first sub-50 second run, next year?

Second and third overall, and both winning their classes, came Ian Gaskell with his black 1.4 BDH engined Westfield, and David Buttle with his red 1.7 litre Westfield.

Gate-crashing the top positions, among the sports cars, and both taking class awards, were Rikky Bartlett in 5th overall with his Peugeot 306 S16 rally car, and FDMC's Competition Secretary Peter Moorcroft, 8th overall in his 1.6 Vauxhall engined Escort.

Among our newer members, Ben Norfolk and his 1380 Mini took the third place award in Class 8, out of 10 entries, and Neville Hudd the third place award in Class 3, out of 11 entries, with his 1600 Nova.
