This year's Summer Sort Out Out was again held on farmland at Birtley Green, and with plenty of September sunshine. With two runs through twelve tests, it was a busy day for the drivers - and for the cars. In dry conditions, and with the best times to count, Kevin Lower's attacking style paid off, to take Fastest Time of Day with his RS2000, by more than 20 seconds.
Among the pursuing hatchbacks, after fierce competition all day, less than 2 seconds eventually separated the next four drivers! Paul Prescott (Citroen AX 1.4) took second overall, just fractions ahead of regular rival Derek Looker (Peugeot 205 XT 1.4), and followed very closely by Jim Pullar (Nissan Micra), and Tony Meadows (Nova). The black 205 GTi is being driven here by Jamie Butcher, who won his class, sharing the car with father Andrew.

It was the first autotest for Andy Fox and his very tidy MGB, which won its class in the hands of co-driver Carl Streatfield. James Tapner was also a class winner, sharing Derek Looker's 205.

Two more award winners, in the sports car classes, were Mike Williams with his Triumph 2500 engined GT6, and Peter Kleyn with his 1725 cc Sunbeam Alpine, normally used for Historic rallies.
The Nova, shared by Bill Mexson and Steve Whittington, eventually had retire with the engine cutting out, but was going fine, with Bill at the wheel, for this picture!
